Rerooting

On this page you can find explanations about restoring dolls.

We also sell Saran hair and rerooting needles in our Fashion Doll Shop.

Supplies:

Saran hair, rerooting needle, tweezers, tweezers with a flat end, tweezers with a pointy ena, thread, needle, scissors, hairdresser's comb.

This method is particularly suitable for short hair:
Cut all the old hair off the head, also remove leftover hair from the inside of the head with flat tweezers. You can also pull out the full length of the hair with tweezers or a small crochet hook.

*Take a strand of hair (for a 'flat' look take 8 to 10 hairs for the inner rings, about 20 for the outer ring, for a 'bouffant' look take about 15 hairs for the inner rings to as much as 40 for the outer ring) take this thru the needle and create a little knot at the end with pointy tweezers.

Put the needle thru a hole from the inside of the head out and take the strand thru. Pull it thru until the knot is against the head. Repeat this process from*.

This method is particularly suitable for long hair:

Take a long strand of hair, make a loop and pull it thru the needle. Pull it thru the head from the outside in. Make sure the loop comes out of the neck opening.

Carefully take the needle off and pull a new strand thru the head from the outside in.

Take this strand thru the first loop and carefully pull the first strand into the head by pulling ot from the outside. Make sure the second loop stays outside of the neck opening.

Repeat by taking each next strand thru the loop of the former one. You will create a wig-type structure inside the head. It's a good idea to tie two loops together with a small piece of thread every 5 or 7 strands. This to make sure you only have to start over a small area if anything goes wrong. These two strands that have been tied together can be used as a single strand when taking a new strand thru the loops. Finish by tying the last two strands together as well.

For both of the methods you can cut and style the hair when you are finished.  To create a parting in the hair you have to root a straight line on one side, flip the hair to the opposite side and create a new line about 3 mm from the former one, thru the flipped-over part of the hair.  Flip it to the other side (opposite from the first line).

Restyling

For straightening hair, simply poor (freshly) boiled water over it, if this doesn't work, you can try putting conditioner in, combing it thru and rinsing it with boiled water. Repeat this several times for the best results. This usually also works for frizzy hair. Flattening hair or bangs can be accomplished by cutting a ring from a zip-lock bag (or something similar) to fit around Barbie's head. Hold the head with the ring above steam (watch out for yourself, steam hurts!) for about 30 seconds, then let it airdry. Remove the ring and the hair is flat. For curling hair you can use bobby pins and elastic bands for the bangs, see above pictures. For bigger curls, use straws or flexible curlers. Once you've rolled the curlers in to place, hold the head above steam for about 30 seconds or longer. Let airdry, remove curlers and DO NOT COMB! You will ruin the perm. It's better to take to pointy end of the comb and loosely style it with that. I sometimes like using spray gel to fix the 'do', but you can use anything that works for you.

Resetting Quick curl hair

For Quick Curls I prefer using long pointy tweezers (pictured at 'rerooting') to use as curling rods, they're nice and smooth, so you can set the curls tight and slide it off easily.

Straightening/ defrizzing hair

Poor a bit of boiling water in a sink, so you can let it flush away easily when you're done.

Lay the hair of the doll in the boiling hot water. Gently comb thru it with a fine comb, the finer the comb, the prettier the end result. If the hair is a little coarse, you can put in some conditioner (as simple as possible, you don't need natural care or something like that for synthetic hair). Comb thru the hair several times. If the water isn't hot enough anymore, pour in some new boiling water and repeat the combing until the hair is as stright as it's going to be or until you are satisfied. Not all frizzed hair will become totally smooth again, so if you don't see any more progress, it's time to quit.
Fixate the hair by holding it under streaming cold water after you're done combing, do this for about 30-60 seconds to get the best result.

Fixate it definitely and work out excess frizz by blowdrying the hair and combing it with the same comb you used in the hot water. Keep the blowdryer at a distnace of  at least 15 cm to prevent the hair from burning or use a simple travelling blowdryer (these are less powerful and also less hot).
